IX Meeting of Researchers in Francoism. 80 years since the beginning of the Franco Regime Granada (Spain), March 10th-11th, 2016 . Call for Papers

Over the past twenty years, the Conference of Researchers in Francoism has become a quality reference for specialists from many fields. In its ninth edition, the organizing committee wants to contribute to the consolidation of a space for the debate and update of approaches and lines of research focused on the analysis of the Franco dictatorship.Under the subtitle “80 years since the beginning of Franco Regime“, the research meeting will aim to achieve the following: First, it will show the centrality of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) as a foundation of the Franco regime and its consolidation. Second, as done in previous meetings, we will reiterate the need for comparative analysis of other fascist regimes in the European inter-war period, now expanding our attention to other non democratic contexts both in the old continent as well as in Latin America. Finally, the conference will attempt to tackle new subjects and perspectives that accommodate the current interests and concerns of the research community, in regards to the Franco dictatorship and the democratic transition process.

Structure and subjects

To achieve these goals, we propose thirteen thematic areas, which based on the number of proposals received, will be assigned to a number of workshops. We intend to create open spaces where both unpublished works and innovative perspectives, as well as consolidated lines of research, may be presented. The main subjects we propose are:

1.     Foreign and international relations and context.

2.     Franco dictatorship and democratic transition from a comparative approach: Latin America and Europe.

3.     Social attitudes and popular opinion in Spain: 1936-1986.

4.     The rural world: Franco and the democratic transition.

5.     Media and propaganda in late Francoism and the democratic transition.

6.     New social movements during Francoism and the democratic transition: women and gender, environmentalism and pacifism.

7.     Resistance and political opposition.

8.     Nationalism and identity.

9.     Religion and public policies.
